Equality North Carolina announced their Charlotte mayoral endorsements on Tuesday, giving their nod to both incumbent Mayor Dan Clodfelter and candidate Jennifer Roberts.
The endorsement differs from an earlier LGBT mayoral endorsement. The Mecklenburg LGBT Political Action Committee (MeckPAC) endorsed only Dan Clodfelter.
Since then, some community members have taken to social media to question MeckPAC’s endorsement or have come out in favor of Roberts.
Both Clodfelter and Roberts have strong records of support for the LGBT community. Clodfelter has been an ally to LGBT causes for over two decades, voting in favor of an LGB-inclusive public accommodations ordinance in 1992 when he was on Charlotte City Council. In the North Carolina Senate, he was a sponsor of LGBT-inclusive measures, including the School Violence Prevention Act and others. Roberts was an ally to LGBT causes when she served on the Mecklenburg County Commission.

Equality NC is also sharing a mutual slate of endorsed City Council candidates with MeckPAC and the Human Rights Campaign. The three organizations are jointly organizing the TurnOUT Charlotte get-out-the-vote effort in advance of the Sept. 15 primary.
